From the archives of The Daily News for July 12:

• In 1914, a shipment of wheat through the Port of Galveston was in full blast.

• In 1914, Galveston County’s bonded debt was slightly larger than the previous year.

• In 1989, allegations disrupted a hearing about the Galveston County greyhound track. One of the applicants was alleged to be linked to organized crime, and the other reportedly had problems with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Control.

• In 1989, two pilots remained lost at sea and were feared dead after their helicopters collided in midair about two miles off Galveston Island. The pilots were the only passengers aboard the aircrafts, which crashed about 4:30 p.m. in the Gulf area perpendicular to Seven Mile Road.
