From the archives of The Daily News for Feb. 9:

  • In 1914, while construction workers were busy building the county’s new jail, a jailer was tipped off by a prisoner in the old jail’s annex of an escape attempt. The jailer found a jagged hole dug through a wall. None of the 31 prisoners being held at the annex on sentences of 15 days or less escaped.
  • In 1989, estimates topped $100,00 for damage caused at a fire the day before at The Hotel Galvez, but fire officials expected repair costs to exceed the estimate. The fire marshal said the blaze was likely intentionally set and looked related to a pair of suspicious fires at the hotel in the previous two weeks.
