  • In 1964, a 52-year-old man was in critical condition at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston after police said he shot himself in the head after shooting his wife in the cheek. Witnesses said the man walked into the Fisherman’s Inn in San Leon shortly before closing time with a .22 caliber action rifle and shot at his wife several times, hitting her once, before leaving the bar. Police responding to the scene heard a gunshot and found the man alone in his parked car with a gunshot wound to the head.
  • In 1989, a lawsuit against Monsanto Chemical Co. was to move ahead after 11 of 12 jurors ruled in favor of plaintiff Sammie Jo Skeen and her family that benzene could have cased a type of leukemia that led to the death of father and husband Wilbur Jack Skeen, a former Monsanto employee. The Skeens were originally awarded a $108 million judgment in 1980, but Monsanto was granted a new trial on claims of “bias, passion or prejudice.”
  • In 1989, four female students at La Marque Junior High School were suspended for three days for wearing concert T-shirts to school a day after officials banned the clothing on campus.
