  • In 1914, delegates at the Texas Good Roads Association convention urged convict road labor.
  • In 1964, it was announced that integration of secondary schools in the Galveston Independent School District would begin in September.
  • In 1989, a late-night chemical spill at the Penreco plant in Dickinson was raising public questions about safety. An acid leak was contained after a volunteer fireman, who lived near the plant, entered the facility and alerted plant workers to the situation.
  • In 1989, despite the heat, the turnout was good for the 18th annual Hitchcock Good Ole Days Parade. The 90-degree morning did not deter more than 100 parade entrants from participating.
