  • In 1914, international traveler Emil Mohr of London chose to spend his vacation time in Galveston. He said he annually traveled to the United States and was “agreeably surprised” with the town and was from now on an “enthusiastic friend of Galveston.”
  • In 1964, Bellaire beat Spring Branch to win the Galveston High School Tournament at Pony-Colt Stadium. Texas City took the consolation prize with a 10-4 win over Ball High.
  • In 1989, Beaumont-based Conquest Airlines received permission from the state to begin flying into Galveston’s Scholes Field.
  • In 1989, one of the four ferries was out of service, and officials expected longer lines on the final weekend of spring break.
