From the archives of The Daily News for Jan. 24:

• In 1914, the grand jury recommended an appointment of a new chief of police.

• In 1914, hundreds of cakes were sold at the final lesson of The News cooking school.

• In 1964, Galveston County voters filled out a form in The Daily News to pay their poll tax. The form and cash or a money order were required to fulfill payment.

• In 1989, cleanup activity at the Motco Pits was underway. The 18-month toxic waste incineration project was on schedule, according to the project manager.
