In tandem with and following the celebration of Nurses Week, UTMB will celebrate the entire Health System.

Among the events scheduled is a visit from Casey FitzRandolph, Olympic speed skating gold medalist.

He will share his journey from a small-town kid with a big dream, to an Olympic athlete at noon Friday in Levin Hall, located at 10th and Market streets.

His presentation, “Believe,” is a message of dedication, perseverance and unwavering faith in oneself.

The Lunch Bunch

UTMB’s Dr. Gordon Klein, a clinical professor in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and an expert in bone metabolism and nutrition, will present “My achy breaky bones: Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis” at today’s meeting of the Lunch Bunch from noon to 1 p.m. at the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway S., in League City.

Sealy Center on Aging

The new UTMB senior learning center will host a discussion “Medicare fraud: I’m not a target, am I?” at 10 a.m. May 20.

The center is in Room 1.612A, UTMB Primary Care Pavilion, 400 Harborside Drive, Galveston, Entrance A.

The event is open to the public at no charge, but reservations are required because of limited seating.

GI cancer support group

Lisa Velasquez, an ACS Star of Hope member, will discuss the American Cancer Society with the gastrointestinal cancer support group meeting at 5:30 p.m. today in Room 1.132 of the Rebecca Sealy Building, at Market and Eighth streets.

The group meets the second Tuesday of each month.

The group and supporters recently competed as the UTMB Cancer Crushers and raised $8,000 in the Relay for Life.

Reconstruction of a Survivor

The UTMB Breast Cancer Support Group meets from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 2098 W. Main St., in League City.

The group helps women at any stage of diagnosis and treatment understand that breast cancer affects them both emotionally and spiritually, not just physically.

A light meal and refreshments are offered. Meetings occur the third Thursday of each month. Meetings are in Galveston on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Askew cancer symposium

The third UTMB School of Medicine Robert E. Askew M.D. Cancer Symposium was in Austin last week. This event is made possible by Dr. Robert E. Askew Sr., via the Shivers Cancer Foundation, for the benefit of UTMB Austin programs.

Among the featured speakers from UTMB were Drs. Avi Markowitz, Maurice Willis, Bagi Jana, Kimberly Borwn, Eric Wlaser, Taylor Riall, Lee Grumbles and Daniel Beckles.
