HITCHCOCK — Fair organizers had families, children and pork lovers in mind when they added several new features to the event line up.

The Swifty Swine pig races, a children’s celebration family game show, a pee wee rodeo, county ribbon roping and a pulled pork division of the barbecue cook-off are all new events.

“We like to change things up every few years to give families something new to participate in,” fair coordinator Melondy Bender said.

The Swifty Swine pig races are a traveling attraction that were once a popular event at the fair but have been absent for the last several years, Bender said. The pigs will compete daily against one another on an obstacle course for an Oreo cookie on a silver platter that awaits the swiftest among them.

Another daily event for families is the children celebration. Mom and dad will team up against one another and the children to compete in off-the-wall events.

Both will be in the livestock pavilion.

“This has a lot of audience participation and promotes family togetherness,” Bender said. “It’s to show how families can do things together.”

Two events, the pee wee rodeo and county ribbon roping, will debut this Sunday. The rodeo will give the littlest cowboys and cowgirls a chance to practice their roping and hay hauling skills.

County ribbon roping is open to all ages. A pair of partners will attempt to catch a calf and remove a ribbon tied to its tail in the shortest amount of time.

The new barbecue pulled pork division of the barbecue cook off replaced the kebabs division, Bender said.
