TEXAS CITY — A 3-year-old Texas City boy was killed and his siblings injured after a single-car accident Thursday afternoon. The father driving the SUV was arrested on narcotics charges.
Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said a man and his four children where headed north on Interstate 45 at about noon when he lost control of his 2009 Chevy TrailBlazer.
The vehicle flipped over several times and landed on its side on the feeder road. A 5-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy were thrown from the vehicle, the sheriff said.
The 3-year-old died at the hospital. His name was not released.
His 5-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother were injured and taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch. Their conditions were unknown but were listed as “serious injuries,” Trochesset said.
A 7-month-old sibling was treated at the scene of the accident and released to a grandmother, the sheriff’s office said.
Two children were riding in booster seats and one was secured in a child car seat, the sheriff’s office said.
Northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway just north of the Galveston Causeway and the feeder road were closed for the investigation. The main lanes of the freeway reopened at about 4 p.m. while the feeder road remained closed most of the afternoon.
The father, Jesse Galicia, 23, of Texas City was also injured and taken to the medical branch, but was arrested on narcotics possession charges after drugs were found in and near the vehicle, Trochesset said.
The sheriff said Galicia told investigators he was having trouble with the SUV’s steering wheel before he lost control.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
