LA MARQUE — An abandoned home and about two acres of land caught fire near the Texas City Wye in La Marque lateSunday night, creating heavy smoke and flames visible to motorists on Interstate 45.

Crews from the La Marque, Texas City, Hitchcock, Santa Fe and Bayou Vista fire departments responded to the blaze, which was reported shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday and engulfed an abandoned house on Irada Street near Highway 146.

La Marque fire Capt. Jason Shafer said the house had been abandoned since Hurricane Ike.

There were no neighboring buildings and no one was injured, Shafer said.

The flames destroyed the home and spread to about two acres of land, but the blaze was extinguished within an hour, Shafer said. Debris and "junk" left near the home contributed to the size of the fire, Shafer said.

Some firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to monitor hot spots at the location.

The cause of the fire was under investigation early Monday.
