GALVESTON — A Galveston man was in critical condition after being shot early Wednesday morning, police officials said.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers responded to reports of gunshots at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of 69th Street.

Officers found Alton Gene Jones III, 29, in the grass near the apartments. Police said it appeared that Jones had been shot.

Jones was taken to the emergency room at John Sealy Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

The incident is still under investigation. A suspect has not yet been identified.

“Detectives are still speaking with those involved in an effort to uncover the events that led to the shooting,” police Sgt. Joshua Schirard said in a news release.

Schirard encouraged witnesses to call the police department at 409-765-3781.
