Galveston County should begin returning to normal today, less than 24 hours after it “dodged a bullet” when a predicted blistery wintry storm came in more like a lamb than a lion.

Despite forecasts calling for freezing rain that was expected to create driving hazards and forced schools to cancel classes, temperatures remained in the mid-30s for most of the day, dropping to freezing around midday.

The National Weather Service downgraded the local Winter Storm Warning to a Winter Storm Advisory early Tuesday as most of the expected precipitation shifted east toward Louisiana. According to the National Weather Service, Galveston registered 0.03 inches of rain by 4 p.m.

“We dodged bullet,” said Michael Lambert of the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management. “Most of the icy precipitation moved to the east.”

Only one road closure because of ice was reported in Galveston County, at 146 northbound at 25th Ave. in Texas City, and local police agencies reported no wrecks attributed to winter weather.

School districts and private schools across the county closed for the second time in less than a week, as the threat of icy roads forced many districts to keep their students at home. The Galveston Causeway remained opened.

Connect Transit operated its buses until 4 p.m. because of reports of sleet in League City and Dickinson. The service was able to transport all dialysis patients before ending service.

By late Tuesday, though, some school districts had decided to reopen their doors today, although some were delaying opening.

The Clear Creek, Dickinson, Texas City, La Marque, Santa Fe and Hitchcock school districts will open two-hours late today. High Island schools will open at 11 a.m., as opposed to their normal 7:55 a.m. Pine Island Christian School will open at 10:30 a.m.

Galveston and Friendswood school districts will open as normal today. Galveston College and the University of Texas Medical Branch will do the same.

Hurricane Adam comes to mind. For those of you too young to remember - it was the early 80s version of Rita.
