TEXAS CITY  — U.S. Coast Guard officials on Wednesday issued a “clarification” about recreational boating traffic after a statement issued by the Galveston County Health District caused some confusion.

On Tuesday, the health district warned residents about risks associated with fishing in areas near where a barge and a cargo ship collided.

The statement confused some who thought it suggested the Coast Guard had halted all area recreational boating, which never happened.

While the area around the damaged barge and established safety zones had restrictions, recreational boating was never suspended, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.
