GALVESTON — Ferry service between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula resumed its regular schedule of operation Wednesday.

Ferries are running 24 hours a day, each day of the week, the Texas Department of Transportation announced Wednesday morning.

The ferry service had been suspended late Saturday. Limited operation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. was restored Monday evening as the U.S. Coast Guard slowly began to reopen the channel to shipping traffic.

The oil spill cleanup effort is still ongoing, and the transportation department warned travelers to still use caution when riding the ferry.

“Travelers should be aware that oily conditions may still exist,” the department said in a statement.

Travelers on the ferry should avoid the bow of the vessel where water spray is highest, the department said.

Ferries will also be traveling at reduced capacity and slower speeds so passengers should plan for additional travel time, transportation officials said.
