LEAGUE CITY — An early morning house fire appears to have claimed the life of a 59-year-old man, fire officials said.

The League City Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fire at a house at 511 Moody Avenue at about 5 a.m. When crews arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames, League City Fire Chief Brad Goudie said.

More than 30 firefighters from four engine companies, as well as a fire crew from Webster, battled the house fire.

It took firefighters about an hour to snuff out the blaze, Goudie said.

Once firefighters got the blaze under control, they searched the house and found the body of Joseph Pergande in the bedroom. Goudie said family members said that the man lived alone.

County property records show he did not own the house.

League City Fire Marshal Wanda Martin said an initial investigation indicated an unattended lit cigarette started the fire and alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

The cigarette believed to have started the blaze was in a different room than where Pergande’s body was found.

Martin said it appears that Pergande was asleep or otherwise unconscious at the time of the fire.

An autopsy was scheduled for today to determine how Pergande died, the medical examiner’s office said.

Friday’s fire was the second house blaze in as many days in League City. On Thursday, a man suffered first- and second-degree burns as his house in the 2800 block of Pickett Drive caught fire.

No one else was injured in the fire that broke out at about 2:45 a.m. Martin said it appears that an electrical issue in the garage started Thursday’s fire.
