Body found

Galveston Police officers investigate the scene near 53rd and Postoffice streets where a body was discovered by a railroad employee Wednesday.

GALVESTON — A badly decomposed body found near railroad tracks on the north side of the island Wednesday has police searching for clues about who the person was and what caused the person’s death.

Galveston police Lt. Timothy Buck said a railway employee found the body north of Postoffice and 53rd streets shortly before 4 p.m.

The body, which could not be positively identified as a man or woman, was in an advanced stage of decomposition and appeared to have been tampered with by animals, John Florence, a spokesman for the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office, said.

The person had likely been dead for weeks, Florence said. It appeared possible animals recently moved the body in sight of the railroad tracks, allowing it to be found, he said.

A preliminary cause of death could not be determined pending an autopsy.

The body was found near the railroad tracks and a power station in a grassy area north of Postoffice Street, about two blocks from the Galveston Municipal Court.

An autopsy will be performed either today or Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
