Flamingo in better days

There’s fresh news on the fate of Flamingo Bar and Grill, 6028 Heards Lane on the island.

The establishment still is open, but the cooks are gone and it’s a bar venue only. Hours are from 4 p.m. to closing Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Although it’s still open, it’s on the market. Owner Bob Greig hopes to either sell or lease the property to a restaurant operator.

Less than a year ago, Greig opened Flamingo Steak and Seafood with great success.

But a few months ago, he surprised loyal patrons by closing that concept to open the more casual Flamingo Bar and Grill, which was billed as a sports and entertainment venue. Patrons, however, preferred the original concept and the new establishment didn't have a strong following.

So why did Greig close the popular steak and seafood concept?

Greig said he wanted to pursue other interests. Owning a full-service restaurant the magnitude of Flamingo Steak and Seafood was a full time job and not one that he wanted to do, he said.

He hopes a restaurant operator will bring such a concept back to the 10,000-square-foot building, which has been home to a long line of eateries, including China Border, China Island Buffet and Saka Sushi & Hibachi.

He plans to keep the bar concept open for a while. He'll either lease or sell the building.

It is too bad and really reflects poorly on Galveston. It is such a visible location to everyone that visits and to see it go through numerous changes and closures sucks! The past reincarnation was really good, but (and I hate to say this) this is a BIG place..a national named brand needs to take this spot.... how about a Buffalo Wild Wings,Chili's a Pappa's concept, something to make this place card of a location that welcome visitors to our island rather than say..."sure 61st street is a tired, old crappy entrance to a wonderful place" but keep on driving it gets better we promise.. Come on Gtown! Where are our civic leaders..lets get on the ball and do something other than what the billionaire owner can give us...do we not have business leaders in this town with a vision?
