The Galveston Elks Lodge will have its Halfway to Mardi Gras Sweetheart Fundraiser at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at 1518 Tremont St. in Galveston.

The event, which will benefit Elk’s charities that support children with special needs, will feature the popular Zydeco Dots, who will provide Cajun and Zydeco music beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

The lodge also will have its annual Labor Day barbecue fundraiser from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at the same location.

Dine-in or carryout will be available, and plates are only $10.

‘The Pirates of Penzance’

The Clear Creek Community Theatre’s Youth Apprentice Program will present the classic musical “The Pirates of Penzance” today through Aug. 16 at 18091 Upper Bay Road in Nassua Bay.

Magic for a new generation

La Marque Aid and Guidance Services will present “Adam Trent: Magician Reinvented” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice St., in Galveston.

Trent, who was recently named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Youths in the Country by U.S. News & World Report Magazine and has been featured on Disney Channel’s “Shake it Up,” is the host of Travel Channel’s “Scambushed,” and has also been featured on WE Channel’s “Joan Knows Best? The Joan and Melissa Show,” just to name a few.

Trent also performs more than 300 solo shows each year.

All proceeds will go toward La Marque Aid and Guidance Services’ 2014-15 school supply assistance program that provides children of low-income families within the La Marque Independent School District with needed clothing, uniforms, shoes and school supplies.

Playhouse 23rd annual gala, fundraiser

The Bay Area Harbour Playhouse will have its 23rd annual gala and fundraiser at 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at 3803 state Highway 3 in Dickinson.

Tickets are $50 per person and include social hour, catered dinner, silent auction, raffle, door prizes and a family variety show.

The Playhouse also is accepting applications for its fall theater classes for youth ranging in ages 6 and older that will begin Sept. 8. Students will learn stage presence, rehearsal and performance etiquette, and character development while building self-esteem and confidence.
