The Galveston County Restaurant Association recently awarded their annual Francisco “Paco” Vargas Scholarship to a Galveston College culinary arts student at a gathering of their organization in the American National Insurance Co.’s executive dining room. The La Chaine des Rotisseurs Bailliage — Galveston recognized their members Chef Paul Mendoza of Galveston College’s Culinary Arts program and restaurateur and Executive Chef Paco Vargas of Rudy & Paco’s Restaurant and Bar as they presented a $1,000 check to Iaroslav “Yarik” Golobokov, a student at Galveston College. Golobokov received the restaurant association’s annual Francisco Vargas Culinary Arts Scholarship based on his academic achievements, his culinary arts skills and his contributions to the community in 2016-17.

Nurse aide, EKG tech and phlebotomy tech courses offered

Galveston College will be offering a Certified Nurse Aide course, an EKG Technician course and a Certified Phlebotomy Technician course in June and July. The Certified Nurse Aide course will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays June 6 through Aug. 10.

The Certified EKG Technician course will be from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays June 12 through Aug. 9. The Certified Phlebotomy Technician program will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays July 5 until Aug. 17.

All three of the above courses cost $899. The programs are eligible for a payment plan. For more information call 409-944-1344 or email CE@gc.edu.

Just for Kids!

Galveston College will be offering a new version of its Kid’s College programs this summer.

Courses for students ages 8-14 include Minecraft Designers, App Attack, Design Your Own 3D Video Game, Private Lessons in Guitar and Ukulele, and Cupcake Crazies. Minecraft Designers, App Attack and Design Your Own 3D Video Game courses are offered in June and July at a cost of $129 each. Guitar and Ukulele Instruction begins Friday and runs through Aug. 10 at a cost of $99. Cupcake Crazies is offered in June and July at a cost of $99. Summer registration and summer office hours

Galveston College has registration now in progress for Summer Session I and II and for the full 2017 fall semester. Summer Session 1 classes start June 5, Summer Session II classes start July 10 and fall classes start Aug. 28.

Galveston College Summer office hours begin today and will be from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
