GALVESTON — Galveston Independent School District this fall will reopen Burnet-Early Childhood University Elementary, 5501 Ave. S, in August, the start of a new school year.

In 2008, Hurricane Ike sent more than a foot of water rushing through Burnet, closing the campus indefinitely. The campus will reopen after $5 million in renovations.

School administrators will walk the neighborhoods surrounding the school today to notify parents of its reopening in time to apply for the school year. They will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the front entrance to the school before the walk.

Parents interested in applying to have students attend the Prekindergarten through fourth-grade campus for the 2014-15 can do so at www.gisdschool or at the GISD Support Center (3904 Ave. T) until May 9.

Major water damage by Ike at the school during one of the hottest times of the year caused excessive mold to grow in the school, leading to its long closure. It was one of four schools closed in the aftermath of the storm in the district.
