It says something wonderful about a school district when an award is given not only for outstanding athletic programs but interlaced with that stellar academic accomplishments. Such is the University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup.
Friendswood Independent School District won its third Lone Star Cup for Class 4A for the best overall academic and athletic programs in the state for 2013-14.
The huge cup engraved with Friendswood and the date will be presented by a UIL representative during halftime at a fall football game.
“The UIL Lone Star Cup honors the best overall academic and athletic programs in the state of Texas,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said. “It takes contributions from every student, teacher and coach in all facets of UIL competition to win this outstanding award. The winning schools and communities should be proud of this incredible achievement.”
The Texas Lone Star Cup is given by the University Interscholastic League and is based on a school district’s combined academic and athletic achievements. All UIL member high schools in good academic and athletic eligibility standing are included for contention.
Standings include state and area marching band, team tennis, cross country, volleyball, football, swimming and diving, wrestling, basketball, soccer, golf, track and field, academic state meet, one-act play, softball and baseball.
“This year will be remembered as one of the most successful in school history,” Superintendent Trish Hanks said. “Athletic Director Robert Koopmann reported that every FHS varsity team made it to the 4A playoffs, and all but one team went past the first round of playoffs. In UIL academics, the computer team and current issues and events had state champions in their groups. Friendswood High School won the academic district meet, was runner-up at regionals and fourth place at state.”
The Lone Star Cup competition began in 1997-98. Friendswood ISD had its first win in 2008-09, then won again the next year, 2009-10. In both 2010-11 and 2011-12, Friendswood took third place. In 2012-13 Friendswood fell to fifth place. Today, for 2013-14, the news is out. Friendswood has won the Lone Star Cup.
Congratulations to all students, teachers, administrators and parents who were involved in UIL sports, activities and competitions that were part of the Lone Star Cup requirements. Friendswood is proud of this award.
