Mr. Woolsey, that sounds like a very thorough vetting of the candidates before you provide your readers with what you would have us believe is the best candidate in your opinion, but the facts are quite different. I'm going to give you the example from your own endorsement.
"Things to like about Roady: One of the best things Roady did was to create a public integrity unit within the district attorney’s office.
It’s hard to overestimate the importance of that move. The politics of Galveston County are raucous. A lot of accusations are made — and someone in authority simply has to clear the air on those that involve criminal wrongdoing on the part of public officials. It’s a thankless job, but Roady was right to focus on it. That one move deserves another term."
First, "things to like about Jack Roady" would suggest you would list more than one but you didn't. That's disingenuous writing, period.
Second, if this Public Integrity Unit was so very important to your endorsement then why weren't you and your editors inquisitive enough to ask Mr. Roady why they very important PIU wasn't utilized in the Judge Dupuy case? Why did the DA Roady stonewall any investigation by his office in spite of the overwhelming evidence? Why didn't you ask the DA why he tried to force the Bar Association to handle it even though the evidence was criminal in nature-which is what the Bar Assoc. told Roady when they sent it back to him? Why did the DA send it to the AG's Office rather than allow his PIU to investigate?
You see Mr. Woolsey, your readers really aren't as ignorant as you and Heber Taylor would like to believe. We expect that if you're going to endorse a candidate-which it's my position you have absolutely no business doing-then you will ask the hard questions and get some real answers before you throw something out there that is not only baseless, but completely ludicrous.
So you gave your endorsement to a candidate-Jack Roady-based on the "creation" of a Public Integrity Unit but then failed to ask him the follow-up question. Why hasn't he used it when he's had the opportunity?
Bvresident: I must agree with you, regardless of the specific issue (in this case Roady). It is starting to look like our friend Mr. Woolsey would do better to stick to homespun Leon Hale type anecdotes of the good, simple, life; until he gets a little experience in his new job. Say 5-10 years.
This is a worthwhile exercise but what might add to it is if the puppet-master behind some of the challengers also showed up and took you up on your generous offer ....
Voters should know who is pulling the strings because it is this single person's well known agenda that will dominate the next two years if their efforts are successful.
Why isn't the puppet master running themselves? Because the last time they did they got badly, badly beaten at the polls.... so they are fronting other candidates to mask the agenda they are going to pursue.....
The Caine Mutiny provides a useful parallel to our election.... After the courts martial Jose Ferrer (lawyer for the defense) meets the defendants at a celebration and has some choice words for the true mutineer - who was not the one charged with the crime...
You ought to read his testimony. He never even heard of Captain Queeg!...Queeg was sick. He couldn't help himself. But you - you're real healthy. Only you didn't have one-tenth the guts that he had...I want to drink a toast to you, Mr. Keefer. From the beginning, you hated the Navy, and then you thought up this whole idea, and you managed to keep your skirts nice and starched and clean, even in the court martial. Steve Maryk will always be remembered as a mutineer. But you! You'll publish your novel, you'll make a million bucks, you'll marry a big movie star, and, for the rest of your life, you'll live with your conscience, if you have any. Now, here's to the real author of the Caine mutiny. Here's to you, Mr. Keefer.
A bit too cryptic for this one npappous.
We need a lot more film and literary allusions around here. Good job, Norman!
Mr. Woolsey, this is an example of how a Public Integrity Unit should be utilized.
What the DA Jack Roady is, is a politician posing as a District Attorney. The PIU is a smokescreen to fool the easily fooled and you know who that would be. The GCDN should stick with what it has some credibility for doing and stay away from endorsements if it's only trying to shine the public.
Mr. Woolsey, I have another question for your regarding your "vetted" endorsement of the DA Jack Roady.
The felony child abuse case against Texas City Police Officer John Thorn-after being indicted by a grand jury-was dismissed by Roady without even going to trial. After an investigation by Child Protective Services and the GCSO, he was indicted by a grand jury and Roady dismissed his case without even going to trial.
So my question is, why didn't the GCDN report the dismissal of this case by the DA's Office? I mean, we all know that TJ Aulds did his best to hide the original arrest on the back pages of the online edition until he got exposed, we all know this police officer was allowed to turn himself in on his own good time, and now we all know he was treated more favorably by this DA's Office than any other regular citizen would have been under the same charge. Of course, had he been convicted with even probation as a sentence, he would have lost his LE license and this DA can't let that happen. It would be okay if Joe Blow lost his job but certainly not this police officer.
I guess the GCDN and the DA's Office didn't want to deal with the public backlash that was bound to rise up when it became known of this "sweet deal". Meanwhile, the TCPD and the DA's Office had no problem letting Joshua Bledsoe rot in jail for ten months even though he was innocent.
Galveston County Criminal District Attorney Jack Roady has two scales of Justice: one for elected officials and law enforcement and one for everyone else.
