GALVESTON — Three people were in critical condition Saturday after a sport utility vehicle rammed into a parked travel trailer on Broadway just south of the causeway.
The accident shut down traffic on the inbound side of the Galveston Causeway as far back at the Texas City Wye. Police cleared the wreck and had reopened all lanes by 7:40 p.m.
According to police on the scene, a man driving a Jeep Cherokee and towing a Dutchman travel trailer. His nephew — who was following his uncle in another vehicle — had pulled over on the shoulder near Lewis Lane to secure a loose window on the trailer. As they were working on the window, a 2006 Ford Explorer driving fast hit the rear end of the trailer and the two men.
The Explorer rolled over before returning upright.
All three people were taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch by ambulance. All three were in critical but stable condition, police said. The driver was suffering from arm injuries. No information about the injuries of driver of the Jeep and his nephew was available.
Galveston police Sgt. Chris Sanderson said that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision.
