Wellness is all around us, but do we really know how to find it? Think for a second what wellness actually means to you and then continue reading.  

There are plenty of books on how to find wellness and there are even centers that offer wellness services from weight loss and stress management to general health care.

Wellness is an active, lifelong process of becoming aware of the choices we may make. These choices have an effect on our lives and the decisions we make as we move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

When discussing wellness, there’s much more than just physical health, exercise and nutrition. It involves a balance of the physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

The National Wellness Institute lists six dimensions of wellness; Ohio State University lists nine.   

Several dimensions of well-being include social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual, physical, financial, aesthetic and career. Each of these dimensions acts and interacts in a way that contributes to our own quality of life.

Plato said, “The part can never be well unless the whole is well.” Healthy minds and healthy bodies are the key to cracking the code. This code may seem easy for some to tap in to, but may seem nearly impossible to others. Don’t be discouraged, as it can be done. Everyone has the ability of finding overall wellness, it may just come down to the individual not recognizing where they may be lacking within the dimensions mentioned previously.  

Once you can pinpoint where there’s a gap, then it should be easier to find the way to fix it. Knowing and understanding your mind and body’s balance is a very important aspect of life, without this knowledge you may not be able to achieve overall wellness.  

Some people may not agree with this at all. They may feel as if they are balanced throughout the dimensions, but if you actually take the time, you may see something that you haven’t realized before.  

As I have stated in a previous article, “You can’t out train a bad diet,” you also must to do more than just train your physical being with good nutrition and adequate exercise. There is much more to overall health than simply going to the gym three times a week for an hour each time and eating decent food. But it’s a great start.

Wellness is the ability to live life to the fullest and to maximize personal potential in a variety of ways. Wellness places responsibility on the individual. Wellness involves continually learning and making changes.
