Galveston Reads chose Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson’s “The Warmth of Other Suns” as its book for 2014. A Professors’ Panel was assembled Feb. 4 at the Old Central Cultural Center to discuss the mass migration of nearly 6 million African Americans from the racial oppression of the South to find better opportunities and fewer hardships in other regions of the country during the middle of the 20th century. “The Warmth of Other Suns” has received many literary awards and prizes. Galveston Reads is comprised of volunteers throughout the community with the goal of promoting reading the same book at the same time to elicit meaningful conversations about topics of interest to local residents. All such events are free of charge and open to the public.
