More than 400 community members donning their finest Texas glam attended Galveston’s American Heart Association Black Tie & Boots Gala on April 12 at Moody Gardens. Event Chairwoman Dr. Hanan Hussein, of the University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Family Medicine, along with the evening’s emcee, “Voice of Galveston” Vandy Anderson, charmed guests onstage and shared vital statistics, successes and the important role research and prevention play to succeed in fighting the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers — heart disease and stroke. This year’s event honored long-time AHA friends, the “Diva and the Doctor,” Frances and Dr. Don W. Powell. The Powells have been keeping the Galveston community healthy through laughter and medicine for decades. They shared secrets to their happiness and emphasized the importance of heart disease awareness.
