The inaugural Old Central Black Heritage Banquet was held Feb. 4 at the Old Central Cultural Center in Galveston. The banquet speaker was Galveston College professor Dale Taylor. In attendance were Doug Matthews, assistant vice president of government affairs at the University of Texas Medical Branch; the Rev. Kerry Tillmon, pastor of West Point Baptist Church; Stephen Holmes, Galveston County commissioner; Cornelia Harris Banks, Galveston City councilwoman; and many other distinguished guests and community members. Dr. Taylor’s speech touched upon her own personal history within her family, how she fit into cultural variances moving throughout the country as the daughter of a U.S. Navy officer and what spurred her interest in studying racial identity as it relates to African-American history and to people of mixed-race.
