Deli dish: More than five years after Hurricane Ike slammed the island, a convenience store and deli are again operating at 8027 Harborside Drive. Mike’s Little Supermarket and Deli has opened at the site of the former Luke’s Supermarket & Deli, reported general manager Scott Postell. Look for the food selection to go far beyond the standard convenience store fare, Postell said. Mike’s Little Supermarket and Deli will serve hamburgers, chicken wings and an extensive menu of Italian cuisine, including Shrimp Diablo and 30-inch pizzas. Nic Notarnicola, who has worked as a chef at notable area eateries, including the island’s Mario’s Ristorante, 2202 61st St., is the deli’s chef.
Breakfast, served at 5 a.m., will include Gyro Supreme Burritos with grilled onions, bell peppers and cheese or French toast with an egg, bacon and cheese sandwich, among other morning meals. There are eight inside tables and eight patio tables. Crews already are working to extend the seating area, Postell said. The establishment has the permits to serve alcohol on the premises. The supermarket carries typical convenience items, including toilet paper, toothpaste, trash bags, dog food, softdrinks, tobacco and more
