It’s a date: Rarely does the opening of a convenience store generate a lot of buzz and excitement. But most convenience stores aren’t Buc-ee’s.
In one of the most anticipated store openings of the year, the 60,000-square-foot Buc-ee’s in Texas City is set to welcome patrons Wednesday. The exact opening time wasn’t immediately available.
The store, Interstate 45 and Holland Road, had tentatively planned to open Monday, but officials were working out last-minute kinks with vendors, sources said.
The Texas-based megaconvenience store chain is known for an abundance of fuel pumps, clean restrooms and road-trip fare, along with clever beaver billboards sporting bathroom humor.
Buc-ee’s expects thousands of people to arrive on opening day. The chain tailors its locations to the market, meaning it will offer merchandise suitable for beachgoers and anglers. The new store also will feature a tourist information stand promoting Texas City.

Double-take: It’s a good sign when a business is open less than a year but already is doubling in size.
MattressLand & Furniture, which opened in November at 2312 Palmer Highway, has completed expansion work on the shop, which carries all types of furniture and mattresses, including Serta and Tempur-Pedic brands.
The expansion brings the store, in a building formerly occupied by Goodwill Industries, to 11,000 square feet.
Justin Yeager and Deano Merrigan own the store. Yeager and associates also are behind MattressLand Clearance Center, which opened last year in La Marque, 6402 I-45, in the strip center sharing a parking lot with Walmart/Sam’s Club.
Can we expect a third store anytime soon?
“We’re working on it,” Yeager said.
New prescription: In the age of big-chain pharmacies, it’s rare to see new, independent ones open. But one just did in Galveston.
Southside Pharmacy has opened at 707 23rd St. The pharmacist-owned Southside specializes in accommodating AIDS and HIV patients, but serves the general public also.
The island pharmacy marks the eighth location for Southside Pharmacy, founded in 1992 by Harish D. Katharani, a registered pharmacist. Southside Pharmacy, in the same building as the AIDS Coalition of Coastal Texas, is one of the few pharmacies that offers deliveries.
Got stubble? Luxury men’s grooming brand The Art of Shaving has opened a store in Baybrook Mall, Interstate 45 S. at Bay Area Boulevard. The shop offers essential oil-based grooming products and high-end shaving tools, including razors, brushes and accessories.
The retail chain said it’s well positioned in the $43 billion male grooming industry.
The Art of Shaving, which began as one small store in Manhattan, operates more than 100 locations.
