Hammer time: An old island apartment complex on the seawall is getting a much-needed makeover. Crews in late December began major exterior renovations of the Antigua complex, 8008 Seawall Blvd. The exterior work includes new paint and replacement of balconies, among other repairs and changes. Jennette Hunnicutt owns the complex, which was built in 1978.
Roth Enterprises is the contractor making the repairs. The 162-unit complex, which has tenants, likely will get an interior makeover when exterior work is complete, Robert Roth, owner of Roth Enterprises, said. Stay tuned.
Grapevine: Downtown island establishment D’Vine Wine has closed, leaving the 2110 Strand space again vacant. D’Vine Wine, which guided patrons in making custom wines, had replaced the 25-year-old Fullen’s Waterwall, which was best known for burgers.
Fullen’s Waterwall was hit with a wall of water during Hurricane Ike in 2008 and didn’t return. The building’s owner, Ali Udawala, said he’ll market the downtown space to other restaurateurs. Stay tuned.
Hot dish: In other downtown developments, rumor has it that Mitchell Historic Properties is “very close” to finalizing a deal that would bring a new Italian eatery to replace Luigi’s Ristorante Italian, which in November left the island after 17 years. Mitchell Historic Properties owns the building at 2328 Strand. Stay tuned.
Departure date: Late last year, Sharon Levy Pagan surprised islanders by announcing she would close Vic’s Estate & Fine Jewelry, 2413 Market St., on the island. The shop has had a downtown presence for 85 years. Pagan, who is conducting business closing sales, now has an official closing date — Feb. 15.
Pagan, whose son Stewart recently graduated from college, decided it was a good time to consider a new career path, she said.
Pagan’s maternal grandparents, Victor and Helen Reiswerg, launched the business in 1929, working side by side for years.
Silent movie: Another year, another sequel to speculation about whether League City is getting a new movie theater. League City officials have long insisted that plans for a $9 million 12-screen movie theater are still alive. Now, officials with Studio Movie Grill concur.
“Plans have not changed, and there are no new updates at this time, but we very much appreciate your continued interest and that of your readers,” Lynne McQuaker, a spokeswoman for Studio Movie Grill said in an email.
Dallas-based Studio Movie Grill announced in August 2012 it would build the theater. But the chain, which pioneered the concept of serving dinner and drinks to moviegoers, was working to purchase a 6-acre parcel on the northeast corner of Interstate 45 and Victory Lakes Drive to make that happen. Real estate negotiations appeared to bog down along the way.
Rumor has it that Studio Movie Grill wants to lease the land, but owner Roy Mease wants to sell it. Mease has not returned calls to his Pasadena law office. Stay tuned.
Fit to print: La Marque is about to get more fit. Harrell Jackson’s Heavenly Bodies has opened at 1017 Suite B on Bayou Road.
Jackson, a nationally ranked aerobic champion and well-known fitness guru, and instructors will offer boot camps, personal training and more at the private fitness and training facility.
