GALVESTON — At an annual celebration Thursday, the Galveston County Young Lawyers Association awarded six high school students interested in pursing careers in law with scholarships.

Jalyn Howell of Dickinson High School received a $500 scholarship. Ruchika Begani of Clear Brook High School, DaNae’ Winson of Clear Springs High School, London Bennett of Clear Falls High School, Connord Ard of Dickinson High School and Allyson Schattel of Ball High School each received $1,000 scholarships.

The county’s young lawyers’ association celebrated “Law Day” at the San Luis Resort, where guests heard from Texas First Court of Appeals Justice Jim Sharp on voting laws.

Jonathan Zendeh Del, president of the association, said this year’s theme was “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why every vote matters.”
