Both Galveston and League City are well on their way to having a fourth consecutive month of below normal rainfall. With the latest Climate Prediction Center suggesting a drier than normal March through May, this is not good news for local gardeners.

The good news is that some rain appears likely this week. The even better news, for those planning on this weekend’s Mardi Gras festivities, is that the rain is likely to move out by the weekend. Unfortunately, any rain this week is likely to be fairly light and we are getting to the point where more is needed.

A cold front is expected to push off the coast by late Tuesday, bringing breezy, wet, chilly (though not extremely cold) weather to the area for the middle of the week. A steady west to east flow aloft will keep minor disturbances moving across the region through Thursday , along with a few showers. By Friday, drier air moving in behind the front should provide rain-free conditions for the weekend along with relatively mild temperatures.

I’m all in favor of a rain-free Mardi Gras, but given the long-term outlook, we will be needing some more substantial precipitation before we get too deeply into the spring season!
