Daily News staff members met this week to discuss details of our Press Run, which is Sept. 13. We’ve been meeting for months, but this time I felt a real sense of urgency.
The Press Run is only two months away. (Reminder: If you want a discount for signing up early, do it soon.)
I only have two more months for training, which I’ll get to in a minute. But my latest worry is what to wear.
The Press Run supports Newspapers in Education and literacy. So, we thought it would be fun to encourage runners and walkers to wear costumes based on their favorite book characters.
I’ve been to plenty of races at which people had a lot of fun and women wore tutus and such. But I’ve never dressed up in costume for one.
I love books. I always have. I started thinking about my favorite character, Bilbo Baggins being among them. Yep, that’s not going to work.
This is my first 10k, and I don’t want anything that will hinder my speed or comfort.
Pippi Longstocking is a strong contender. I could acquire some striped socks, put my hair in pigtails and voila! I could opt for a red wig with pigtails, but the thought of wearing one while running in the heat is unappealing.
I’m very open to suggestions and pointers on wearing costumes on race day. If you know of a great book character costume that won’t slow me down, please let me know.
And I would love to know whether you plan to participate in the Press Run and whether you’ll wear a costume. It’s not mandatory to wear a costume, just fun.
I have been training, but suspect I’m overestimating my distance. So, I finally acquired an app to track my progress. But that's a topic for the next blog.
