Usually in a contested election about taxes, you would expect to have vocal opposition and proponents on the issue. And, for the most part, there’s a lot of chatter for and against when it comes to the La Marque school district’s tax ratification election.

Most of the proponents we’ve heard from are employees of the school district or members of the school board. Rev. James Daniels and Rev. D.N. Benford recently came out in support of the TRE’s passage, but they were also once ardent opponents.

We keep hearing from school district employees that there are supporters out there. It’s been our experience that no one is willing to admit to that. As a result, our efforts to find general community support for the TRE have thus far been unsuccessful.

We’re told there was a group of people who met with a political action committee in Houston and got permission to use that group’s “Vote FOR” signs in support of the tax rate increase. But no one from the school district will tell us who those people are.

District spokeswoman Margaret Simon said she knew of a letter the group secured giving them permission to use the Houston signs. When we asked for a copy of the letter, Simon said she didn’t have it. We called the treasurer for the Houston group that reportedly gave permission to use the signs. He hasn’t called us back.

We’ve asked everyone we’ve talked to who might be out there to talk in favor of the TRE, who doesn’t work for the school district. Our hopes were to give more of a voice to proponents from people other than school district officials.

After weeks of effort, we have gotten no response.

Simon told me a lot of her neighbors are in support of the TRE and she did attempt to see if they were willing to talk to us. No one wanted to talk.

We made a similar request of Rev. Daniels. No one spoke up. We even went to Facebook asking to hear from non-school district supporters of the TRE. The only responses we received were in opposition.

So, on the eve of what is no doubt the biggest election in La Marque school district’s history, is there anyone out there willing to speak up in favor of the TRE?

Simon’s email to us may provide the best answer.

“You know and I know this is a very sensitive issue in this community,” she wrote.
