State Sen. Tommy Williams announced Wednesday that he will not run for state comptroller, ending an exploratory bid that began just over a month ago.

“I am sincerely humbled by the outpouring of statewide encouragement to enter the Comptroller’s race. [His wife] Marsha and I have had to balance this political opportunity with my responsibility to the families of Southeast Texas as their State Senator,” Williams said in a media release.

“I also feel serving as Chairman of the State Senate Finance Committee is incompatible with the demands of simultaneously running for a statewide election.”

Williams term as senator ends on 2016.

On May 29, Williams added his name to a bevy of other Republicans looking to replace the retiring Susan Combs as state comptroller. Still thought to be in the race are state Sen. Glenn Hager, R-Katy; state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville; former gubernatorial candidate and Tea Party activist Debra Medina; former state Rep. Raul Torres, R-Corpus Christi; and, possibly, former House speaker Tom Craddick.
