Another legislator who has long represented parts of Galveston County will forgo his position in 2015.

State Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, announced Thursday that he will not return for the 2015 legislative session.

Williams’ Senate District 4 includes part of Texas City and the Bolivar Peninsula.

In a media release, Williams said he made the decision after meeting with Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.

“After careful consideration, Marsha and I recently decided it was time to turn the page to a new chapter in out life, “ Williams said.

Williams did not say what his plans for the future are. He had previously considered running for the state comptroller’s office, but in July announced that he had decided against running.

Williams, a certified public accountant, currently serves as the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He was first elected to the Senate in 2003, after serving three terms in the state House.

Dewhurst, in a statement, said that he was disappointed in Williams’ decision to step down, but wished Williams well in his future endeavors.

“I’ll always recall the relentless persistence he showed in working with me and our senators in crafting a nuanced, conservative budget this year below inflation and population growth that will keep our economy strong while maintaining robust balances in our Rainy Day Fund,” Dewhurst said.

Williams is the second longtime local leader to announce he will leave his position at the end of 2014 legislative session. In May, State Rep. Craig Eiland, D-Galveston, announced that he would be giving up the seat he has held since 1993.
