The wind was 15 mph in Galveston and the temperature in the low 40s. It was enough for anyone to hide away. The lagoons were empty of wading birds despite brilliant sunshine.

At the beach, any photographic equipment better be sheltered against the angry onslaught of sand-corns.

At least, the pelicans along the island's piers had their own wings to shelter from the breeze.
