Sports Editor John DeLapp is training for his first 5K race, The Daily News Press Run, on Sept. 14, 2013.

I think I had a great workout today, but I'll never know for sure.

There I am, following the Galloway Plan's run/walk/run mantra like a madman and I'm feeling good. Not just good, but REAL good. I was pickin' 'em up and puttin' 'em down and moving right along. When it was time to walk, I was looking forward to the signal to start running again.

Yeah, I was feeling it.

Then, after a while, I wasn't feeling good any more. My heart was pounding and my chest was heaving. And that's when I realized that I had been running for a good long time. I'm not sure just how far I went on that running stretch, but it was probably two or three times what I should have done.

I checked my phone and saw that the workout had ended. I inadvertently touched the screen and shut down my workout app. The GPS had stopped recording my distance and time, too, so I don't know how far or fast I went.

I'd like to think there is a lesson here to this, but I am coming up short.

I guess I'm going to have to start using my phone case that straps onto my arm. I wasn't too happy with it before, because it squeezed my bicep too much and I couldn't read the display screen because it was up on my arm, but it's better than having my workout come to a sudden end.

The Beatles provided today’s musical accompaniment; specifically the "Rubber Soul" album, which I have grown to appreciate more as the years go by.

"Rubber Soul" is a fine example of folk rock. That seems kind of odd because The Beatles are not usually associated with that genre. But, Roger McGuinn has said The Beatles invented folk rock, they just didn't know it.

I'll trust McGuinn, since he was a founding member of the seminal folk rock band, The Byrds.

Here's some tracks:

Norwegian Wood

If I Needed Someone

What Goes On

and, of course
