GALVESTON — The city council will consider a resolution this week to join in a county program that would help the city collect unpaid traffic tickets.

The council will consider approving a resolution that would permit a contract with the county tax assessor that would allow the county to refuse to register a motor vehicle that has unpaid fine connected to its license plate number. The city would pay the county $3 for every refused registration, but would collect the sum of the fine in return.

The policy would only affect vehicles that attempt to register in Galveston County, or in other counties participating in the program, known as the Vehicle Registration Renewal Denial program.

A similar policy was enacted in League City earlier this year.

During a brief discussion of the idea at their Sept. 25 meeting, the council was told he policy would only apply to vehicles with moving violations. The council was also told that policy would not result in immediate returns for the city, because tax assessor Cheryl Johnson prefers to begin the program with an informational period that would notify people of the policy well before enforcement begins.
