Sports Editor John DeLapp is training for his first 5K race, The Daily News Press Run, on Sept. 14, 2013.

So, it's been a week now of this running thing and I have learned two things:

1. Be consistent in your workout regimen.

2. If you don't follow rule No. 1, you will feel pain.

On Memorial Day, I dutifully did my workout, which is a combination of running and walking. Then I took a day off to recuperate. On May 29, I was back at it. Muscles I didn't know existed ached, but I got through Day 2.

Then life settled in and I didn't get a chance to put on my sneakers for four days. There was a long run scheduled for Day 3, too.

For the most part, my legs worked fine, but about halfway through I noticed my lungs were just not capable of delivering enough oxygen to my body. They also had this curious burning sensation that I decided I didn't like.

Eventually, I finished the run and made my way home, not feeling real chipper.

So, there's my lesson for all the other newbies out there. Take time to make time for your workout. You will appreciate it in the end.
