Sports Editor John DeLapp is training for his first 5K race, The Daily News Press Run, on Sept. 14, 2013.

You may remember that I'm using the Galloway Plan to get ready for the Press Run 5K. I'm in week five and it seems to be going pretty well.

To recap, the workout is pretty simple. It's a run-walk-run approach and starts with a minute of running, followed by a minute of walking. Over time, the workouts are lengthened and eventually you are run-walk-running a 5K.

Now, it probably seems pretty simple to remember to run for a minute then walk for a minute, but sometimes you forget. Or intentionally fail to remember.

Anyway, I have found a way to make it easier. It's a smartphone app called "Easy 5K With Jeff Galloway" and it's really quite good.

It's pretty much foolproof, too. Trust me, I would know. You just plug in your headphones, crank it up and go. The app calculates your workout for you, uses a GPS to measure how far you run, plus Galloway tells you when to walk and when to run.

Galloway has an interesting voice. He kind of reminds me of the late Bob Ross, who had a painting show on PBS. But instead of telling you to paint an optimistic little cloud, Galloway offers up little nuggets of how you should listen to your body but still push yourself.

An added plus to the app is that you can listen to music while it runs. The app has a bunch of techno vibes that speed up when you are running and slow down when you walk. Apparently, it helps you with your pacing by doing that.

Lately, I have taken to listening to other music. Today was an Allman Brothers day. Songs like these make the workout much more pleasant, even if they don't speed up when it's time to run.
