The island’s biggest celebration returns with parades, music, art cars and some zany golf carts and art cars this weekend.

Get things started

Mardi Gras Galveston officially begins with the George P. Mitchell award and parade

The award ceremony, the first since the Mitchell died last year, and parade will help kick off the festivities at 5:30 p.m. today in the Entertainment District.

Parades begin new tradition

For the first time in Mardi Gras Galveston’s 29 years, two of the island’s most popular parades — Krewe of Aquarius and Krewe of Gambrinus — will travel from Seawall Boulevard and make their way downtown. Previously, the parades were only on the seawall.

Krewe of Aquarius starts at noon Saturday and Krewe of Gambrinus starts at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Carts and Art

On Saturday, the Galveston County Daily News presents the annual Golf Cart and Art Car parade. This is the third year for each event that used to be separate parades, but this year they have been combined.

The Daily News’ Zaniest Golf Cart & Art Car Parade is 4 p.m. Saturday in the Entertainment District.

Also this weekend in the Entertainment District

Mardi Gras! Galveston 2014 opens at 5 p.m. today with the Pardi Gras Parade and ends with the Krewe ‘da Yagas Parade at 10 p.m.

In addition to the parades, the Entertainment District features two stages with DJs and musical acts throughout the weekend.
