Welcome to In Focus, the new photography blog from The Galveston County Daily News. Photography Editor Jennifer Reynolds and I plan to bring you extra photos, behind the scenes details and anything else you'd like to know about photography in the newspaper. Feel free to ask questions or bring up topics you'd like discussed in the comments.

What first gave me the idea for this blog almost five years ago right before Hurricane Ike hit, and what I plan on being one of the regular features, will be called "Outtakes."  We take hundreds of photos every week, sometimes every day, that will never see the light of day. Usually it is because they aren't quite as good as the photos we do print but when it comes to sports that isn't always the case. Many times a great photo won't make the paper simply because it doesn't fit the story or the outcome of the game.

Which brings us to the very photo that inspired this blog on September 6th, 2008. I figured this would be a good image to start things off with especially since high school football season starts today.

During the second week of the football season, on the very first offensive play of the game, Friendswood quarterback Jacob Karam fired a rocket to wide receiver Austin Fitzpatrick only to have it intercepted by Dayton's Xavier Baldwin. Great action and great light, it would have been perfect for the next day's paper, I was stoked. Except right afterwards Karam got rolling and threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns. The Mustangs went on to blowout the Broncos 42-21 and that great shot on the first play of the game didn't matter anymore.
