Below is one of several items I wrote and set aside back when I was waiting for this blog to be created. I thought it was still interesting enough to share over a year later.

(March 8, 2012) I often get to see interesting things while on assignment for the paper but a piece of Daily News history caught reporter Chris Paschenko's eye on Tuesday.

The interior of the home at 1406 Ave. L in Galveston is seen on Tuesday afternoon March 6, 2012. The home is one of two purchased by the Galveston Redevelopment and Community Enterprise Corp. to be restored with help from the Galveston Historical Foundation.

We were carefully touring a dilapidated house with Brian Davis of the Galveston Historical Foundation for a story about a restoration partnership between GHF and the Galveston Redevelopment and Community Enterprise Corp.

With sunlight pouring in through holes in the disintegrating roof Chris noticed a folded up newspaper on top of the antique television set. It looked old. We carefully unfolded it to reveal a copy of The Galveston Daily News from September 1, 1976.

What surprised us the most was the remarkably good shape the newspaper was in. Despite being on the top floor of a home that has sat vacant and all but abandoned since the 1990's, a home missing a large portion of it's roof and that was subjected to Hurricane Ike, this 35-year-old copy of the newspaper was mostly undamaged.

Too bad we'll never know the whole story of how it survived all these years.
