Coach William B. Bush

A Ball High great from years gone by who should be remembered by many old-time Tors died this month.

It was a sad day Dec. 5 when Galveston great William B. Bush died at 101 years old. He was just 15 days shy of his 102nd birthday.

Bush, who was the first to graduate from Texas Tech with a degree in journalism, led the Tors for 16 years, starting in 1936. His Ball High squad made the playoffs in 1949, and Bush was once chosen to coach in the North-South High School Football Classic all-star game.

There's no doubt, Bush was one of the pioneers of the Tors football program, but it's been a generations since he roamed the sidelines on the island. There has to be some who remember this standout coach. Maybe you have a memory of Bush or an amazing story from his days at Ball High. If you do, I'd love to hear from you.

Email me with your memories of coach Bush at jim.levesque@galvnews.com. If you have any stories or photos, I'd love to share them with the rest of The Daily News' readers.
