Cougars' season ends in disappointing fashion

La Marque’s Lawrence Montegut tries to hold back tears after losing 31-20 to Navasota on Friday in the 3A Division 2 Regional Playoff.

Well, it happened way too soon for many Galveston County high school fans — the football season is over.

La Marque was the final county team left in the playoffs before the Cougars were bumped from the postseason by top-ranked Navasota on Friday. It was a great season for La Marque, but it didn’t end the way the Cougars wanted.

But that’s not an abnormality. Most football teams see their season end with a loss, unless it didn’t even make the playoffs. Only a select number of teams finish their year with a win and hoist a trophy. And for Galveston County squads, it all ended far too early.

We had seven teams make the playoffs — Texas City, Friendswood, La Marque, Clear Creek, Clear Springs, Hitchcock and Bay Area Christian. Four squads didn’t make it past the first round, and three more lost their next game. Only La Marque went on to the third round.

The Cougars probably lost to the eventual Division II-3A champs, and Bay Area Christian fell to Shiner St. Paul, a squad playing for the TAPPS Division III state title this weekend.

It still was a good season for many county teams — it just ended too quickly for the coaches, fans and players.
