The state track meets are going to be held Friday and Saturday. As I looked over the list of entrants from Galveston County schools, I was struck by the level of talent we have this year.
Friendswood's Ryan Teel has already won four gold medalsin track and cross-country and he's going for two more.Tiffany Terry of Clear Springshas a good shot to bring home the iron in the 400 meters, 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay.
Dickinson's Lauryn Caldwell is another multiple-qualifier in discus and shot put.
Then there is the Texas City girls relay team that is comprised of sophomores and who knows how good they will be as seniors?
People are going to be talking about these athletes for years to come and rightfully so. But, I'm curious. Who are the greatest track and field performers from years past?
You know, the people who were so fast, or could jump so high or were so strong that you were left slack-jawed. Those folks. I can offer two from back in the 1990s.
One was Ball High's Mike Martin, who was unstoppable in 1997. That year, he was undefeated in the 100 meters and when he won the state title, you knew it was going to happen when he left the starting blocks. The remaining 99-plus meters was just a formality.
The other was Jenice Winston of Clear Creek. At the District 24-5A meet in 1995, she won the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the long jump. She was also second in the high jump and was part of the 4x400 team that also placed second. She could do it all.
So there's two for you to ponder. Let me know what you think.
Also, if anybody knows what ever happened to Martin, Winston or any other great athletes from the past, let me know. I'd like to know how they're doing.
