Galveston County bars, restaurants and hotels sold more than $7 million in alcoholic beverages in March, according to mixed beverage tax receipts from the state comptroller’s office.

Nearly half of the sales — about $3.3 million — occurred in the city of Galveston.

Sales in the county were near what was reported for the same month in 2012. Last year’s county wide gross receipts for alcohol sales in march totaled $7,096,603. This March, the county totaled $7,050,663.

Four of the county’s top-ten alcohol sellers — The San Luis Hotel, the Side Yard, the Pleasure Pier and the Hotel Galvez — are on Seawall Boulevard.

The San Luis was at the top of the list with $300,214 in gross receipts. Only two other businesses — Jackie’s Brickhouse in Kemah and the Side Yard — reported sales of more than $200,000.

The San Luis beat out February’s top seller, Mike Dean’s RPOINT5 Ventures, which owns Yaga’s and several other bars. The group reported $221,263 sales in February, but was not listed on March’s tax receipts. State rules do allow for late reporting and it is possible that the company and other absent businesses will appear on future reports.

The Carnival Triumph, which in March 2012 recorded $122,736 in alcohol sales, reported zero sales this March. The cruise company canceled all of the ships cruises in the month following the ship’s disastrous February journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
