Qualifications of the Candidates

Wight Lawsuit Related to the Alvin Ball Fields

Economic Development and Long Term Planning for Build-Out Q: What is your platform on those issues?A:

Focus at this time should be on street repair/maintenance

My qualifications are better suited to service on City Council than those of my opponent

In my opinion, the Wight Lawsuit related to the Alvin Ball Fields has been the most contentious and divisive issue our city has faced in recent memory. I would like to see the issue resolved through a negotiated settlement so that we can put it behind us and allow the healing process to begin.

A target build-out population of 50,000 residents has been identified as ideal for a variety of compelling reasons. (Candidate’s answer exceeded word limit)

Q: What does the city need to do to increase business development along its main corridors?A:

With citizen input, I believe that we should identify the types of businesses that we would like to have join our community, activity seek them out, and pair them with local landowners that are interested in developing their property. I will often ask fellow residents what types of businesses they would like to see move to Friendswood. Additional restaurants are frequently mentioned. A high school student recently suggested a Chick-Fil-A as a fast food option. Other responses include a Whole Foods Market and a 24 hour pharmacy. Short term tax abatements are another idea to assist smaller retail businesses with getting established.

Q: How would you rate the city's dedication of resources to infrastructure: Poor, fair, about right or excellent? Why do you rate it that way?A:

I generally believe that the dedication of available resources by city staff to particular issues is excellent. In speaking with citizens around the city, I am frequently told that city staff response to complaints/call-ins has been very good, particularly with regard to water, sewer, streets, and drainage. I do have some concerns however, with regards to whether our city staff has all of the resources and personnel they need to address maintenance issues related to facilities and infrastructure.

Q: What resources should be dedicated to help curb crime, especially from those outside the city?A: Friendswood was recently recognized by Neighborhood Scout as the 20th safest city in the United States with a population over 25,000 and the safest city in the Houston metropolitan area. I would say we are doing pretty well and our police department should be recognized for their efforts to make this a reality for Friendswood. My recommendation would be to continue as we are but continue to be vigilant as trends in crime can and do change. Should this occur we should adjust resources and personnel as determined by our police department.
