Galveston fencer Kathy Machol took third place in women’s epee at the 15th annual Fete de Lune veterans fencing tournament last Saturday. Machol tied for third with Nicole Trojanowski, of Dickinson. Rosanne Legon, of Katy, placed second. Diane Kallus, of Round Rock, placed first.

The tournament was held in the gym of the Gilruth Center at the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake. Veterans tournaments are fencing tournaments restricted to fencers ages 40 and older. The Fete de Lune, hosted by the Clear Lake Fencing Club, is the oldest and most prestigious veterans tournament in Texas. Awards for the women’s events include unique sterling silver jewelry by fencer and silversmith Nicole Trojanowski.

Machol, a regular competitor at the Fete de Lune, is a fencer and youth coach with the Galveston Fencing Club.

While the club has about a half dozen veteran fencers, it also has a sizable youth group. Classes are offered to children as young as 8 years old. The youth class meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:15 p.m. in the gym at the O’Connell College Preparatory High School. A senior class for teens and adults is held on those same evenings at 7:30 p.m. In addition to classes and club fencing, the Galveston Fencing Club maintains an active tournament presence.

The Galveston Fencing Club has plans for two tournaments this fall. On Saturday, Sept. 28, the club’s annual Jean Laffite Classic tournament will be held. The Laffite will include novice events for students who have been fencing for a year or less. On Saturday, Dec. 7, the club will host the Gulf Coast Texas Division of USA Fencing’s qualifying competitions for the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships.

Additionally, Galveston’s sister club, the Clear Lake Fencing Club, will hold a tournament, the Jerry Dunaway Memorial, on Oct. 26. Another nearby club, the Brazosport Fencing Club in Lake Jackson, will hold its annual post-Thanksgiving tournament, the Gobbler’s Revenge, on Saturday, Nov. 30.
